Review:
The ‘Black Powder Mother Loader’ EP throttles in with ‘Dogs of War’. A full in your face, hard rocker of a song, with a riff that will get the mosh pits around the country bouncing towards the stage. A powerfully, catchy opening number that sums up the Voodoo Johnson style.
‘Swear It To The Sun’ is a more laid back song full of blues and soul. This is the song that will bring the Pearl Jam comparisons sprouting out in reviews; personally I feel there is a lot more depth to this slower song than people will give them credit for. It still has that powerful bass sound and raw guitars that you associate with VJ and to compare them to Pearl Jam on the basis of one song is foolish. ‘Swear It To The Sun’ still has that forceful Voodoo sound.
‘United/Divided’ is all about the guitars. That heavy bass and constant raw guitar riff gets right into your brain and melds with your skull. ‘The Garden’ slows things down and has an exquisite acoustic guitar sound, together with a poetic lyric which is sung with passion. This will no doubt be the two man acoustic number halfway through the live set. Beautifully played and sung.
And then you get hit with the final track on the EP, ‘Black Skies Mist’. Written with the legend that is Diamond Head’s Brian Tatler, it is a full force, no holds barred metal song. It’s metal with a captivating tune. Mr Tatler also provides some excellent guitar on this track.
‘Black Powder Mother Loader’ is the first release featuring vocalist Nik Taylor-Stoakes, and he proves he’s more than able to front a band with this much ability and raw power. Five tracks full of rock, metal and speed, yet a perfect balance of all three. Powerful songs, which are well written, played to within an inch of going over the precipice into hard core. Thankfully they never do. British Hard Rock to be proud of.
